Q: What was your first experience in theatre?
I grew up in a very small town and wasn’t really exposed to theatre when I was a kid. My freshman year of high school, I auditioned for the school musical, and had no clue what I was getting myself into. I was Dr. Finsdale in Li’l Abner. It’s funny that my first role was a male, because I now have an interesting history of playing men’s roles.
Q: What is the best piece of career advice anyone has ever given you?
I don’t remember who told me this, and for that I am ashamed. The most valuable piece of advice I’ve received is to never stop learning, and to keep your mind and your abilities open to all sorts of artistic opportunities. As a result, I’ve had the pleasure of working in a variety of artistic capacities, and my list of “hats” keeps growing.
Q: Tell us about a backstage or onstage mishap you lived through.
I experienced a wardrobe malfunction while playing the title role in Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. The first scene where Cindy comes in carrying large packages from her sister’s shopping trip, I bent down to place the boxes on the ground, and while I was down there, a stepsister took a tiny step back and ended up standing on my skirt. When I came back up, the skirt didn’t come with me. I heard a large ripping sound, and I looked down to see it laying on the ground around my ankles. I picked it up and ran “to my own little corner” and while I sang, a glorious angel in black (aka the costume assistant) crawled onstage and sewed it back onto me.
Q: What is your dream role?
To sing: Francesca in Bridges of Madison County To play: Sibella in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder
Q: What is your current guilty TV Pleasure?
I have so many! I watch all the superhero shows religiously, Game of Thrones, Man in the High Castle, Walking Dead, House of Cards, Shameless, Orange is the New Black, and I keep rewatching The West Wing cause I can’t get enough. My current favorite is Mozart in the Jungle, and I’ll be binging that when season three comes out.
Thank you Sabra!!! Check back next Friday for our first 5QF couple feature!!!
