Today we’re talking to Taylor Pietz, a busy St. Louis actress! You can catch Taylor doing a reprise of her last cabaret, #CRAZY IS THE NEW BLACK on June 11th in The Emerald Room at The Monocle, and in Fiddler on the Roof at The MUNY. She’s also shooting a Western in the fall called Retribution.
Taylor has worked with New Line Theatre, Insight, St. Louis Actors’ Studio, Variety, and others. She has a song on iTunes called “Color Me” and is working on a full length album.
Q: What was your first experience in theatre?
My first theater experience was playing Lucy in “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” in 5th grade. It was then I learned that I have a crazy memory, so I ended up learning everyone else’s lines too. Poor Mr. Tumnus couldn’t remember a single line so I whispered all his lines to him during our scene. Of course, my whispering wasn’t as quiet as I thought it was since everyone heard 🙂
Q: What is the best piece of career advice anyone has ever given you?
The best advice I’ve heard is sort of two fold. The first part is to treat every audition like a free class. Even if you don’t as well as you’d hoped, you get something out of it. Sometimes you’ll learn something about yourself and how you handle nerves, and at the very least you might learn an awesome dance combo and get a great workout in the process. Second, someone once told me that the people behind the table WANT you to be good. They’re rooting for you. Because if they don’t get good people at auditions, they won’t get a good show. Once I started looking at it that way, it makes the audition process way less scary.
Q: Tell us about a backstage or onstage mishap you lived through.
Well, I’ve been pretty lucky with things like wardrobe malfunctions and missed entrances. But probably the most mortifying experience was my very first show at STAGES St. Louis. Two weeks into the run of Thoroughly Modern Millie I passed out back stage. They stripped me out of my costume, put the swing on for me and took me away in an ambulance. Turned out I had to have my gall bladder removed. But after I recovered they still let me come back for Joseph later that summer!
Q: What is your dream role?
Well I’m too tall and old for my original dream role (Little Red in Into the Woods) but I’d say now it would have to be The Bakers Wife in Into the Woods and Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice.
Q: What is your current guilty TV Pleasure?
My TV guilty pleasure is Castle 🙂 I mean, come on, it’s Nathan Fillion! And it’s rumored he’s gonna be in Guardians 2!
