Today we’re excited to feature a local STL actor, Amanda Boyer! Amanda is currently featured as The Baker’s Wife in the East Central College production of Into the Woods.
A pull toward character roles has driven Amanda Boyer forward on the St. Louis theatre scene. Recently, Amanda Boyer’s award nominated turn as “Nancy” in Oliver fulfilled her goal of sharing the stage with each of her three boys, as her youngest son, Harrison, played a smooth pickpocket in Fagins’ Gang.
Q: What was your first experience in theatre?
A: My high school did not perform a lot of theatre, so my first experience was the summer after I graduated. While I had both singing and dance experience, I had never auditioned for a Musical before. I decided to audition for an upcoming production of “Once On This Island”. Lo and behold, I not only made the show, I landed my first Lead role as Erzule, the Goddess of Love. It was one of the most terrifying and rewarding moments that I have experienced in theatre. I have been hooked ever since!
Q: What is the best piece of career advice anyone has ever given you?
A: The Theatre world is very competitive. Be happy for your friends that get parts/roles, even when you don’t. Keep your chin up, your day will come. It makes life much happier. Also, when auditioning, just remember the Directors WANT you to be good! Auditions don’t have to be scary, enjoy them, show them what you have to offer.
Q: Tell us about a backstage or onstage mishap you lived through.
A: I was in an Off Broadway show in New York City a few years ago. After weeks of rehearsals the big Opening Day finally came. Guess who woke up sick? THIS GIRL! So sick in fact, that I could not stop coughing Day or Night, nor could I hear out of my left ear. It was everything that I could do while on stage to NOT cough. I’m sure I was purple in the face from holding my breath and holding back “The Plague of the Cough” that sometimes, sneaked out no matter what I did. That Cough lasted two days of the show and the hearing slowly came back. Somehow I made it through the rest of the run with great reviews. I now take my Vitamins, Drink Water and always have Germ-X and Airborne in my bag! P.S. As a vocalist, if I feel a tickle in my throat, I toss in a Slipper Elm Throat Lozenge. I swear by them!
Q: What is your dream role?
A: Well I have a few dream roles, but at the top of my list would be the fabulous Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard. What a role….”Mr. DeMille, I’m Ready For My Close Up”
Q: What is your current guilty TV Pleasure?
A: Who’s got time for TV?!?!? I am almost (yes ALMOST) embarrassed to say that I love anything on the FOOD NET channel. That being said, I always TiVo Survivor and Dance Moms!
